About Kelso, WA

Kelso, WA, located in Cowlitz County, is located in the southwest part of Washington and is the second-largest city in the county. According to the 2010 census, 11,925 people call Kelso home. Kelso was founded in 1847 by Peter W. Crawford, a Scottish surveyor, and incorporated in 1889.

Three rivers run through the city of Kelso including the Cowlitz, Columbia, and Coweeman. The Cowlitz River is well known for smelt fishing and became known as the Smelt Capital of the World in 1956 by the Kelso Chamber of Commerce. Today, the smelt run has declined significantly due to overharvesting, climate change, and habitat loss.

Kelso is conveniently located along Interstate 5, the main north-south interstate in Western Washington. Locals can easily access Portland, 45 minutes to the south, and Seattle, 2 hours north, via Interstate 5. The Pacific Ocean lies 2 hours west of Kelso, and 2 hours east you'll find the Cascade Mountains including Mount St. Helens which is famous for the eruption in 1980.

The Coweeman River, the lesser-known fishing rivers in Southwest Washington, begins in the hills west of Mount St. Helens and flows for 30 miles before emptying into the Cowlitz River. Anglers will find mostly steelhead in the Coweeman River.

Pacific Ocean

Just 90 minutes west along Highway 30, residents arrive along the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The most popular destinations are Long Beach, Ocean Park, and Seaside. During the summer months, the beach towns are bustling with locals and visitors alike enjoying everything the beach has to offer. During the fall and winter months, the beaches attract people from all around the area wanting to experience the giant waves, high winds, and blinding rain as the winter storms roll into the coastline.

Cascade Mountains

Whether you enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, or a day at the lake, you'll find something for everyone year-round in the Cascade Mountains. Two hours to the northeast, up Highway 12, you'll find the White Pass Ski Resort and two hours southeast you'll find Timberline Lodge & Ski Resort. The Cascade Mountains are home to the infamous Mount St. Helens that erupted in 1980 blanketing the region with ash.
